Barre is a fusion of pilates, yoga, strength training and ballet. But don’t panic, this is not a ballet class!

What is barre?

The term ‘barre’ comes from the actual barre (horizontal bar either attached to a wall or standing on legs) that ballet dancers use to train with and what you can expect to use in many of our classes. Barre classes are designed to be full-body, muscle endurance workouts and are aimed to strengthen and lengthen the body in ways that few other workouts can. Read more or watch what Michael, our founder, has to say about barre here.

Barre is unique in the fact that it is low on impact but high on intensity. Low impact means it’s easy on the joints, but by no means an ‘easy’ workout. So, full of value! Typically, each class is broken down into different sections that focus on major muscle groups including the arms, legs, glutes, and core. The muscles in each group are fatigued with small targeted movements, a high number of repetitions, and light weights or resistance bands.
